Stachyose · Natural prebiotics
水苏糖 · 天然四糖益生元
Among functional oligosaccharides, stachyose is gaining growing attention from nutritional science for its unique tetrasaccharide structure and targeted prebiotic activity.
What Is Stachyose?
Stachyose is a naturally occurring functional oligosaccharide found in plants of the Labiatae family and legumes, composed of fructose-glucose-galactose-galactose. It is particularly abundant in the traditional Chinese herb Rehmannia glutinosa and serves as a core functional component of soybean oligosaccharides. With low sweetness, low caloric content, and high stability, stachyose resists digestion by human enzymes and reaches the large intestine intact.
Core Prebiotic Mechanism
The key value of stachyose lies in its selective prebiotic activity. Research demonstrates that stachyose selectively promotes the proliferation and metabolic activity of beneficial gut microbiota, particularly Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus. Experimental evidence confirms that 15 strains of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus—including B. breve, B. longum, L. fermentum, and L. reuteri—can effectively utilize stachyose.
Health Benefits Beyond the Gut
① Gut Barrier & Inflammation: Oral stachyose restores microbial balance, alleviates colonic tissue damage, and reduces pro-inflammatory cytokines. Multi-omics studies confirm stachyose alleviates experimental colitis, with significant increases in colonic medium-chain fatty acids. It also regulates Treg/Th17 balance and boosts butyrate production.
② Metabolic Syndrome Improvement: In high-fat diet models, stachyose significantly improved overweight, hyperlipidemia, hepatic steatosis, and systemic inflammation, while enhancing intestinal epithelial barrier integrity and reversing gut dysbiosis.
③ Glucose & Lipid Management: Stachyose participates in the tricarboxylic acid cycle to assist glucose reduction, and lowers blood cholesterol. Research has revealed a novel mechanism by which stachyose exerts anti-diabetic effects through regulating gut microbiota-dependent tryptophan metabolic imbalance.
④ Enhanced Mineral Absorption: Short-chain fatty acids produced by stachyose fermentation lower intestinal pH, increasing the solubility and bioavailability of calcium, magnesium, and iron.
Safety & Suitable Populations
Stachyose is naturally derived, non-digestible, and calorie-free. It is suitable for individuals concerned about gut health or with insufficient daily dietary fiber intake, and can be reasonably used across all ages. For diabetic patients, stachyose does not cause sharp rises in blood glucose. As with any prebiotic, first-time users are advised to start with small amounts to allow gradual gut adaptation.
